Diversity. Innovation. Creativity. These are the hallmarks of the 2010 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards (LMBA) winners who were announced at the prestigious Gala Dinner on October 15 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman hosted the Awards dinner with Brisbane Marketing and announced Urban Art Projects, a specialised design consultancy for architectural and landscape environments, as the winner of the Optus Platinum Award.
Nine category award winners were also unveiled, revealing businesses and individuals who have significantly contributed to Brisbane’s $85.3 billion economy.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said the key strengths of Brisbane’s economy are its diversity, innovation and creativity and the Award winners possess these attributes.
“The 10 winners have been recognised not only for their outstanding contributions to the growth of Brisbane’s economy, but also for their ability to enable innovation, create and attract talent, and connect to the national and international marketplace,” Cr Newman said.
“I would like to congratulate Urban Art Projects for its commitment to investing in Brisbane’s creative industry and continually expanding in overseas markets.
“Thank you to all winners and finalists for your significant contributions to Brisbane’s economy and bringing new talent into the Awards program.”
Each of the 10 Award categories was judged by a panel of four local business and government leaders. These 40 leaders have made a resounding impact in their respective sectors, bringing a tremendous amount of global experience and expertise to the Awards.
“Together with Brisbane Marketing, I would like to thank the 122 nominees, the judges, our sponsors and the 560 guests who collectively contributed to the enormous success of the 2010 LMBA program,” Cr Newman said.
The fifth LMBA Gala Dinner was opened by well known Channel 7 personalities, including Sofie Formica, The Great South East host; and Mark Beretta, Sunrise sports presenter.
Guests were further entertained by Brisbane’s freshest emerging local talent – indie rock upstarts Last Dinosaurs, jazz singer Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells, and local DJ Dave Madden.
The skills and creativity intrinsic to the Awards program was further demonstrated in the paintings received by the winners. Local artist, Adam Bogusz created the 10 works of art, each portraying an abstraction of Brisbane using a vibrant blend of colours and drama.
Brisbane Marketing’s Investment Attraction Division, the City’s official investment promotion agency has managed the LMBA annual program since its inception in 2007, and hosted the prestigious Gala Dinners with the Lord Mayor.
The annual Awards Program will continue next year, and nominations are expected to open in May, 2011.
“The Awards are not only about celebrating the strengths of Brisbane’s businesses, but to inspire others to pursue innovation and generate knowledge-based growth both at home and internationally,” Cr Newman said.
“I encourage all Brisbane businesses to consider nominating for the 2011 LMBA.”
